POTC 3 / Shrek 3 movie review
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End is one of those films that we pretend to understand very well that we don’t talk much of the plot but instead talk about our own favorite scenes so that we might appear to be smart and that we understood the point of the whole movie.
But although I like this movie, more than last year’s Dead Man’s Chest (which I found very long, confusing, and well…long…), I think this series needs multiple viewings in order to be understood. I admit that some plot lines in AWE are too complex for me to handle since I’ve only seen POTC2 once (in DVD only). And you should consider yourself very very smart if you clearly understood every line in the film with those “pirate” accent. Well, I should assume that most of Pinoy moviegoers doesn’t understand every line spoken and so we rely on context clues or whatever is happening visually. The problem in this film is that MANY things are happening at once that I tend to ignore this plot exposition hoping to make sense of it. The confusing plot is what irk the critics. The current Tomatometer rating is 47%.
But I guess I enjoyed this movie more than Spider-Man 3 cause AWE doesn’t disappoint. It successfully tied up the loose end from the 2nd film. And just like its abbreviation, AWE is really an awesome visual experience. The production design is terrific. The sea battles are better than the one in Master and Commander although some pirate ships were merely backgrounds which do not actually participate in the whirlpool battle. Davy Jones beard tentacles looks very real as ever. Check out the ILM.com and click on Experience to see a demo on how Davy Jones was made in CGI. I also like that “up is down” thing where they flip the ship over…
What I don’t like very much is the very long Davy Jones’ locker scene. I though the Locker is a dark place but in the movie it’s opposite. The multiple and mini Jack Sparrows are too much for me. I think it’s for those “who can’t get enough of Jack” girls. I’ve seen that idea before in Spongebob. And it’s not funny kinda used up too much here.
My favorite character is Barbossa. I think his absence in Dead Man’s Chest makes the movie boring. By the time Barbossa appeared at the end of that movie, I got more excited for AWE. The way he delivers his line is classic.
Needless to say, I think I should view this movie multiple time in order to appreciate mor. ![]()
RATING:
POTC1: 9/10
POTC2: 5.5/10
POTC3: 7.5/10
——————————–Â
Of all “3″ movies this summer, I enjoyed Shrek 3 the most. Though I don’t think I’m not in the position to compare the superiority of the first two movies, I still find Shrek 3 enjoyable because of its several cultural references. I like how they portray Cinderella, Snow White and Rapunzel as modern day American college girls (sluts….hahah….parang Mean Girls). There are several scenes that made me laugh out loud… The death of frog king is one of them. Some jokes are recycled and the the body switching of Puss and Donkey is not a fresh idea anymore since Donkey became a stallion in the 2nd. I don’t find the singing frogs at the king’s funeral funny because I’ve already seen singing slugs in Flushed Away (a better movie than Shrek 3 btw).
Anyway, Shrek 3 is an ideal stress reliever for all of us. Just don’t expect for a stronger ending than the previous two.
Rating:
Shrek: 9/10
Shrek 2: 9/10
Shrek 3: 8/10
Now that all “3″s are over…It’s time for “4″s…
Trans4mers. Fantastic 4. Die Hard 4.
And then Harry Potter 5. Whooo! Can’t wait!
