10 Annoying Computer Stupidities among Pinoys

I’m not claiming to be a know-it-all techie but these are the things that I noticed from other people that really annoys me.

1. Double clicking a hyperlink
- Forgive them for they do not know the difference between a file/folder and a hyperlink…

2. All .com
- They think all websites end with a .com and they end up in a fake website that displays a chockful of links or worse a different website. (e.g. whitehouse.com vs whitehouse.gov)

3. Google or Yahoo as reference
- Putting www.google.com or www.yahoo.com as a reference in a research paper is just plain dumb.

4. Powerpoint slides
- Why do they have to right-click and select “Previous Slide” just to go back to the previous slide when they can just hit the Backspace key or click the small back arrow button at the bottom-left of every Powerpoint (2003) slide show? A right-click menu on a slideshow really annoys me.

5. Web vs. App
- I saw someone on TV saying that her favorite website is Google Earth because she likes to travel. What the? Does she mean: http://earth.google.com? Or the Google Earth application itself? Maybe she thinks that all apps requiring an internet connection in order to work properly IS a website. Or she might actually mean Google Maps? Hmm…

6. Putting “www” to all URLs
- Not all URLs have a “www” prefix. So it bothers me when people advertise their blogs without even knowing the real address of their blogs. (http://www.username.blogspot.com where it should have been http://username.blogspot.com .. or you can omit the http:// of course).
Sometimes whether the “www” is there or not, the URL is still valid. But still, it’s annoying…

7. Floppy virus
- A very classic example. Long before Windows XP became popular there’s a myth that when you drop a floppy on the floor, there’s a great chance that it is infected with a virus as if the virus exists in physical form!

8. Typing in exact search keywords on Google
- Why type in “music in the trailer of pirates of the caribbean the curse of the black pearl” where the words “music trailer pirates caribbean curse black pearl” achieve almost exactly the same results? Remember that Google ignores words such as “the”, “of”, “in”, “a” etc so why waste time typing them? And don’t expect Google to be so intelligent that it can answer your most “natural languange” keyword.

9. MS Word: Using spaces instead of tabs
- One of the reasons why my mother hates Microsoft Word because it automates everything. She hates the automatic numbering, indentions and capitalizations etc that’s why she prefers to type documents in Excel. When I asked her to type her documents in Word, I noticed that she uses a lot of spaces to align certain paragraphs. My god! Look at those irritating green wavy lines!

10. “Search engine, duh?”
- I received an email from a friend asking me to send him the lyrics for a certain song via email. He should have googled it in the first place rather than wasting his time (and effort) mailing me about it.

(BONUS) And finally, the most annoying computer stupidty —> using Yahoo! as a search engine. I’ve seen many people (especially in internet cafes) still relying on Yahoo! for their everyday searching needs. Of course, Yahoo has some excellent services to offer but, come on…No matter how good Yahoo! Search is, Yahoo is not “the” search engine to use.

I agree.

It’s not a mistake but is just annoying. I mean, the cyberworld is a very very big place.

Kaiinis..

    napakahusay.

    eto naman ang masasabi ko…

    1. Double clicking a hyperlink
    - meron bang mga taong ganun? hindi ko napapansin. teka, nakakawindang ata yun, nakakapagod dahil pwde namang isang beses mo lang iclick ang isang link. ako kase right click tapos Open link to New tab ang drama ko, ayoko kase ng maraming nakabukas window.

    2. All .com
*kamot ulo*

    3. Google or Yahoo as reference

    6. Putting “www” to all URLs

    8. Typing in exact search keywords on Google
    - tumpak!

    9. MS Word: Using spaces instead of tabs
    - gusto nila mahirapan sa pag-align kaya ganun

    10. “Search engine, duh?”
    - tinatamad lang siya maghanap kaya ganun :p
