A Late Review of “Superman Returns”
Yeah, yeah, yeah. It’s almost a month ago when it was released at ngayon ko lang mare-review. This “review” (just like any other reviews I have) is actually my thoughts about the movie. (I don’t consider myself as a good reviewer nor a movie critic.) So what took me so long? Well, it doesn’t matter. Basta satisfied na ako dahil napanood ko pa rin sya sa big screen yesterday. Baka kasi mawala na sa sine once ipalabas na ang “Sukob” and “The Break Up” this Wednesday.
I was surprised that although this is the 4th week of release and considering that it was a Monday, marami pa ring tao. Siguro dahil walang pasok. And there was a bunch of annoying kids at my left that only shuts their mouths when Superman is flying. And towards the middle of the movie, a camera flashes from behind everytime Superman is on screen! Wala lang ba magawa yun or masyado syang arouse kay Superman? (sorry for that word, expression ko na kasi yun e). Hindi ba sya marunong mag-internet para maghanap na lang ng picture ni Superman kesa sa picturan sya sa loob ng sinehan? Grrr…
Ok. Enough of that.
Let’s start with the things that I like. The opening credits! Yey! It’s obviously a homage to the 1978 film complete with the majestic Superman theme and it was done well. I thought this part is one of the 3D scenes in the IMAX version but I later found out that it was not. This is the kind of visuals that should be seen in 3D pero hindi pala eto yun. At the end of the movie, I was humming the Superman theme and unknowingly fuses them with the Star Wars theme (both written by John Williams).
After that short Luthor scene, here comes Superman. Siguro there are about 3 rumbling scenes here. You know, the part na may parang mini-earthquake. Feeling ko over-used na. I don’t have anything to say about the cast because they all play their part well. Brandon Routh as a newcomer is excellent. I can’t imagine another actor playing the character that Reeves left. Kate Bosworth looks like Natalie Portman in some angles and I think she’s prettier in the movie that in real life. In short, mukha siyang malandi pag blonde.
Kevin Spacey looks better when bald than with wig IMHO.
Buti na lang binabaan ko ang expectations ko. I didn’t expect more action scenes because I heard na konti nga lang. And one of them seems forced, basta lang may masabi na may action scene (the part with the bullet time effect). Speaking of some CGI, I didn’t notice it because it was not meant to be noticed, isn’t it? Though it was obvious kung saan yung may CGI. The flying effects are way cooler than the original film. (Dun daw ba i-compare?). At one point (the gas leak), it reminded me of Neo while escaping the exploding building in Matrix Reloaded.
And the part about Superman having a son? (Oops! Did I spoil it? That’s ok. My brother spoiled that part to me too…) I think that issue wasn’t resolved well. I was expecting something more especially with Lois and Richard’s relationship.
After seeing the movie on a standard theater, siguro hindi ko na gugustuhin mapanood yung 3D scenes in IMAX. There are other action pieces (from other movies) that’s worth seeing in 3D, I think. I’m not saying that the action scenes in Superman is bad. They are all very good. But not good enough to make me crave for an IMAX experience.
I rate Spiderman 2 (my all-time favorite supergero movie) with a 9.5/10 so I ‘m going to rate Superman Returns with an 8.5/10.
Public exhibition!
