Digital Fortress

Kahit napaka-busy ng week ko, sinubukan kong isingit ang movie-watching sa schedule ko. As a result, I watched The Island. Kinukulit kasi ako ng ate ko na manood nito kaya di ko napigilan. At dahil nainggit ako sa kanya na twice na napanood ang movie plus the fact na nandito si Scarlett Johansson, I watched it alone. One more thing: Birthday kasi ni Chris (kahapon, Aug. ngayon kaya i-maginin ko na lan na ni-libre nya ako.? I think this is the first time that I went to a theater alone. It was kinda weird. Para akong tanga.

 

 

The first half of the film is great. There is? enough sci-fi touches that will surely amaze. Kasi yung mga clones ang insurance policies ng future. Para if ever na maaksidente ako and need a heart transplant, may makukuhaan ako ng heart…syempre dun sa clone ko. But the second half is just another series of car chases. Ano pa ba aasahan natin kay Michael Bay? The director of Pearl Harbor, Bad Boys II and Armageddon? Syempre, maraming kotseng nagliliparan. I don’t care of the car chase scenes kasi parang pare-parehas na lang. I’m after the story. It’s more interesting to watch particularly the part where two Ewan McGregors come face to face. And as expected, the second half of the film just focuses on the action and leaves the plot hanging. SPOILER ALERT: Di ko gusto yung ending. Nawala yung humanity issues. Natapos na yung movie after the clones has escaped and faced the real world. Yes, the clones are also “human”, they have emotions etc etc…but? are they really supposed to live in this world? Do they have a soul na galing kay God? If I were the writer, I’ll end the film by killing all the clones. (Sama no?) I don’t care kung mamatay si Ewan at Scarlett. Exterminating all the product clones and the shutting off of that company could be the biggest sacrifice of all. From my moral point of view, cloning should be prohibited. Okay lang sana kung hanggang karton lang yung mga “human” products. Bakit kasi kailangan pa silang buhayin at hayaang mag-isip? Pwede naman silang patuluin na lang? At bakit di nila lagyan ng GPS ang bawat clone para if ever na nakatakas ay madali silang makiita? E di ba future na nga ang setting.
Anyway, despite some of its flaws, I’ll give it a 7.5 for its effort to make a sci-fi film on the first half and incredible performances of Mcregor, Johansson (so delicious in that dream sequence) and Sean Bean (LOTR’s very own Boromir!!) and of course, the stunning visual effects.

PS. I saw the trailer for Dungeons and Dragons 2. It was bad. I heard that the first one is a bad movie and now they are making another one? Sinamantala yata nila dahil walang LOTR this year. When you see the trailer, masusuka kayo sa itsura ng dragons, pang TV series lang ang quality considering na may “Dragons” sa main title ng movie. Worst, they used “Gothic Power” music in the trailer! It’s the same music originally used in Fellowship of the Ring (which was also used in Terminator 3 and War of the Worlds)
